"Johnny Space Commander!" went on the back burner for a bit.<br />
I have been preparing for a show in Charlotte, that happens to be taking place while the DNC is in town. However, the show fell through, I'm left with some good paintings. Like this one:<br />
<br />

Sure, it looks like he has too many fingers, but what the hell, I'm an artist not a mathmatician.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Anyway, I'll be back to Johnny, Dick and the Doc pretty quick here, so all of those people who are not buying "Johnny Space Commander!" can keep on not buying it when issue 5 is done.</div>

Johnny Space Commander: Smirk Til You Die</h2>

You know how in <em>Transmetropolitan</em>, the glasses that Spider Jerusalem wears are shaped as though the wearer is permanently displaying a look of “what the heck am I looking at”? I think it’s a funny appearance. Skeptical and slightly comedic at the same time.<br />
Literally every character in <em>Johnny Space Commander</em> has that facial expression melted into their skin. And I’m okay with it, somehow.<br />
<br />
<div class="wp-caption aligncenter" id="attachment_2175" style="width: 203px;">
<a href="http://www.spandexless.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/JSC1.jpg"><img alt="" class="size-full wp-image-2175" height="304" src="http://www.spandexless.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/JSC1.jpg" title="JSC1" width="193" /></a>
<div class="wp-caption-text">
Probably because I look like this every day.</div>
</div>
<br />
Somehow, also, I feel like I shouldn’t be laughing at anything in this multi-issue comic by Sean Parnell; it’s cheesy, low brow, and it looks like something right off a Sunday morning newspaper comic page. But that just makes this whole thing funnier to me. I can’t stop reading it. I like it too much.<br />
I mean, <em>Johnny Space Commander</em> is basically Bill Watterson’s Spaceman Spiff with dick jokes. Its tagline is even “Saving The Universe One Ridiculous Situation After Another.” It’s old sci-fi pulp like what <em>Calvin and Hobbes</em> would lightly satirize, with a caffeinated story pace, simple-as-bread plots and cookie cutter characters, and it’s funny. Johnny Space Commander and his trusted sidekick, D.I.C.K. D.R.O.I.D., fly around the universe defeating every kind of Saturday Morning Cartoon villain you can think of, and they do it in a style that’s 60% drama, 30% dirty humor and 10% fourth-wall bashing shenanigans. The writing depends on the humor, of course, since even making fun of these types of pulp plots got old with <em>Mystery Science Theater 3000</em>. Combined with the speedy plot pace, it managed to make me laugh pretty often.<br />
<br />
<div class="wp-caption aligncenter" id="attachment_2176" style="width: 447px;">
<a href="http://www.spandexless.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/JSC2.jpg"><img alt="" class=" wp-image-2176 " height="450" src="http://www.spandexless.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/JSC2.jpg" title="JSC2" width="437" /></a>
<div class="wp-caption-text">
Oh my God her face never changes and I’m cracking up</div>
</div>
<br />
The jokes are ostensibly crude. Characters with names that are puns on genitalia, giant acronyms that spell out insults a second-grader uses, you know how it is. I like that Parnell can shovel in good sci-fi references without being overbearing though. My favorite jokes are the ones that break the wall, but not too much. They take you out of the action very briefly with something that forces you to consider how dumb this whole thing is, then, just as quickly as it came, it disappears, and you’re back in cheesy drama mode. I mean, the heroes find themselves in a life-or-death situation, and Dick Droid still manages to insult the villain with a facial expression and a tone and that looks and sounds like he’s reacting to somebody peeing on his pet dog. <em>Why am I giggling</em>?!<br />
Some of his jokes are a little drawn out, like when he decides to get real obvious about the Star Trek reference he was making for issue 1, but more often than not I think Parnell’s work is amusing. It’s impossible to take seriously, but he stays inside the bubble this kind-of-sci-fi constructs for itself just ever so delicately, so you’re never left feeling like the satire is too transparent. If it were too meta, it wouldn’t work.<br />
<br />
<div class="wp-caption aligncenter" id="attachment_2178" style="width: 486px;">
<a href="http://www.spandexless.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/JSC4.jpg"><img alt="" class=" wp-image-2178 " height="279" src="http://www.spandexless.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/JSC4.jpg" title="JSC4" width="476" /></a>
<div class="wp-caption-text">
That is the happiest vomiter I’ve ever seen, anyway.</div>
</div>
<br />
It helps that the art accentuates the goofiness of the dialogue. It’s energetic, full of whacked-out poses, and nobody ever sports a facial expression that doesn’t imply that they’re sniffing crack. And God, does it ever look like Spaceman Spiff. You remember that, right? Please don’t make me cry. It’s normally a style you might associate with wacky kid-grade entertainment, but in spite of its relative simplicity Parnell does some pretty dynamic stuff with it for action scenes. He can go a pretty long way with basic shapes and colors, and he can fill up a scene with detail without making it look cluttered.<br />
You know, in spite of some missteps, I think this is an alright comic. If you don’t take the jokes too seriously, I think you’ll find this to be funny. Also, he has some promo stuff in the back of the comics for several other projects, and they look like they could be good too. Though I’m not sure if the below image is a real project or not.<br />
<br />
<div class="wp-caption aligncenter" id="attachment_2177" style="width: 460px;">
<a href="http://www.spandexless.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/JSC3.jpg"><img alt="" class="size-full wp-image-2177" height="701" src="http://www.spandexless.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/JSC3.jpg" title="JSC3" width="450" /></a>
<div class="wp-caption-text">
At the risk of sounding weird/creepy though, I would absolutely read this.</div>
</div>
<br />
<strong>TL;DR</strong>: Sean Parnell set out to make a comic that mixes meta-humor with low-brow comedy and manages to come up with something that at least had me laughing even when I didn’t mean to.<br />
Johnny Space Commander <em>is written and illustrated by <a href="http://johnnyspacecommander.blogspot.com/" jquery172047971853171463996="20" target="_blank">Sean Parnell</a>. It has been up for a month already, but I have been busy, too busy to post anything. So here it is, on with the review!<br />

Johnny Space Commander #1 by Sean Parnell</div>
</div>
<div style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; margin-bottom: 24px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Today’s book is Johnny Space Commander by Sean Parnell</div>
<div style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; margin-bottom: 24px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
If the movie Airplane 2: The Sequel were a comic book and starred a hapless adventurer and his robotic sidekick, then it would probably be called Johnny Space Cmmander and would be written and drawn by Sean Parnell.</div>
<div style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; margin-bottom: 24px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Johnny Space Commander is a farce comic that sends up sci-fi adventure movies and tv shows while taking every opportunity to make a sex joke or body fluid reference. But, like the classic farce movies of the 80′s such as Airplane and The Naked Gun, these simply add to the overall humor of the book. It is clear that the reader is not supposed to take any of this seriously. Instead of working hard to create a sense of drama and mystery while sprinkling in bits of humor (like most comics), Parnell turns it on its head and takes every opportunity to cash in on a joke, and sprinkles in a little action and adventure.</div>
<div style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; margin-bottom: 24px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
The stories of Johnny Space Commander are neat little adventures which are designed to give Johnny an opportunity to show off his skills as a fighter or pilot, while bringing him in to contact with as many colorful characters as possible. Johnny, more often than not, plays it deadpan while the rest of the cast is free to make sex jokes, make cheap gags, or come up with some Deus ex Machina to resolve the scenario, often with hilarious effect.</div>
<div style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; margin-bottom: 24px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
The art is probably the weakest part of the entire package. When it comes to art, Parnell is a good writer. It is not that the art is particularly bad, it is more that it is not very refined. Like the script, the art is designed so that the reader will not take it very seriously. That is the problem. The joy of the farce movies is that they tried hard to recreate the look and feel (at <a href="http://stumptowntradereview.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/kirby-puberty.jpeg" style="background-color: transparent; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; border: 0px; color: #743399; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"><img alt="" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-7128" height="300" src="http://stumptowntradereview.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/kirby-puberty-200x300.jpeg" style="background-color: transparent; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; border: none; display: inline; float: right; height: auto; margin: 4px 0px 12px 24px; max-width: 100%; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;" title="kirby-puberty" width="200" /></a>least on the surface) of whatever genre they were spoofing. With Johnny Space Commander, there is little effort to make it look or feel like any other comic.</div>
<div style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; margin-bottom: 24px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
The notable exception is in the Jack Kirby puberty spoof backup story. Parnell does a solid job of mimicking Kirby’s art which takes something that would be mildly funny and turns it in to something with several laugh out loud moments. Had Parnell chosen to take Johnny Space Commander in that direction and make it a spoof in the art style of classic Buck Rogers or Flash Gordon, then the book would have been over the top!</div>
<div style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; margin-bottom: 24px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
The backup features are a happy diversion in each book. They are an opportunity for Parnell to try something a little different and to stretch himself. The story featuring his real-life brother is not only hilarious, but also a little heartwarming as well. Clearly Parnell has plenty of good ideas that are just begging to be let out to play!</div>
<div style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; margin-bottom: 24px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
In the end, Johnny Space Commander is a fun diversion. So relax, enjoy the adventure, and know that Johnny Space Commander is on the job!</div>

More often than not we’re presented with short scenes comprised of endearing pastiches that develop the plot just as quickly as the jokes are volleyed about, then we’re presented with an abrupt chapter break, something along the lines of “This thing just happened, why/how/what will it mean? Find out immediately following this sentence, in the next chapter!”</div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; line-height: 18px; margin-bottom: 15px; padding: 0px; text-align: center; vertical-align: baseline;">
<a href="http://johnnyspacecommander.com/" style="background-color: transparent; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; border: 0px; color: #d8471d; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;"><img alt="Image" class="wp-image aligncenter" height="517" src="http://comicsastonish.files.wordpress.com/2012/06/1-revenge-of-the-robots-of-jupiter_page12_image1.jpg?w=1014&h=517" style="background-color: #e2dbd1; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; border: 1px solid rgb(209, 191, 166); clear: both; display: block; height: auto; margin: 8px auto; max-width: 100%; padding: 3px; vertical-align: baseline;" width="1014" /></a></div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; line-height: 18px; margin-bottom: 15px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
I believe this is done solely for reasons of style, playing up the campy, serialized aesthetic, yet it can sometimes do a disservice to the narrative by continually pulling you out of the quickly developing stories. It breaks the flow, sometimes a bit too much, and leaves strange, unnecessary hiccups in otherwise straightforward and succinct tales. If these stories were originally written as web comics and thus the broken, stutter-step structure was inherently coded into them then it would make sense, but if they were conceived and always intended to be written as full-fledged comic books it makes little sense. It sometimes feels like a running joke that never quite finds its footing. That being said, making sense is senseless when we’re speaking nonsense – and <em style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">Johnny Space Commander</em> is definitely to be taken as nonsensical madcap. It reminds of an early Marx Brothers film; Surrealistic chaos sold through snappy dialog. It’s a helluva lot of fun to read through and the frantically paced narratives keep you on your toes as a reader.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; line-height: 18px; margin-bottom: 15px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
The humor varies wildly between juvenile potty humor, pop-culture references and character nuance/behavior, and then, the meta commentary upon all of. The dialog is quick and sharp, the situations are ridiculed smartly and there is an infectious and bombastic energy surging throughout the proceedings. It feels like a great cartoon series just waiting to happen; this is all very vibrant and alive stuff, and it seems barely containable on the static page. The sense of timing in the writing seems wonderfully suited to live recitation, so I’d love to see this leap into the world of moving pictures. <em style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">The medium is the message</em>, of course – so I’m not trying to denigrate comics by saying ‘it could be a show’, sequential art as a medium is wonderful and unique, but there are certain traits to this series that just automatically make me think it would work very well as an animated adventure.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; line-height: 18px; margin-bottom: 15px; padding: 0px; text-align: center; vertical-align: baseline;">
<a href="http://johnnyspacecommander.com/" style="background-color: transparent; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; border: 0px; color: #d8471d; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;"><img alt="Image" class=" wp-image aligncenter" height="510" src="http://comicsastonish.files.wordpress.com/2012/06/1-revenge-of-the-robots-of-jupiter_page5_image1.jpg?w=1014&h=510" style="background-color: #e2dbd1; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; border: 1px solid rgb(209, 191, 166); clear: both; display: block; height: auto; margin: 8px auto; max-width: 100%; padding: 3px; vertical-align: baseline;" width="1014" /></a></div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; line-height: 18px; margin-bottom: 15px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
The author enjoys breaking the fourth wall and is continually making self-referential quips both in and out of character. The characters even comment upon their fourth wall destroying commentary – meta-meta-humor. You start to read the whole thing with a wink and a grin as you realize you’re not only <em style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">in on</em>, but <em style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">part of</em> the joke.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; line-height: 18px; margin-bottom: 15px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
I did occasionally find myself somewhat dismayed by the repetition of some of the more impoverished comedic beats. We spend almost an entire issue running the already not funny name “Blu Balls” into the ground; it’s a cheap joke and it definitely doesn’t merit mention after mention after mention. A situational joke concerning the pun ‘blu balls’ is grin inducing once, <em style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">maybe twice</em>, but after the tenth time I just roll my eyes.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; line-height: 18px; margin-bottom: 15px; padding: 0px; text-align: center; vertical-align: baseline;">
<a href="http://johnnyspacecommander.com/" style="background-color: transparent; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; border: 0px; color: #d8471d; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;"><img alt="Image" class="wp-image aligncenter" height="512" src="http://comicsastonish.files.wordpress.com/2012/06/bluballs.jpg?w=1014&h=512" style="background-color: #e2dbd1; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; border: 1px solid rgb(209, 191, 166); clear: both; display: block; height: auto; margin: 8px auto; max-width: 100%; padding: 3px; vertical-align: baseline;" width="1014" /></a></div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; line-height: 18px; margin-bottom: 15px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
This is a small quibble though – and an easily forgivable one. Overall, the humor hits the marks it aims for expertly and the aforementioned pacing of the series bolsters the bits that do work and helps to hide the bits that fall flat – it’s moving so quick you’ll forget about the lame Blu Balls pun in a few seconds and stumble upon something that <em style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">is</em> genuinely funny.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; line-height: 18px; margin-bottom: 15px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Each issue contains a short back-up story as well and these are absolutely fantastic. Take for instance, “<em style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">Jack Kirby’s Puberty</em>” it probably shouldn’t work – but it really does.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; line-height: 18px; margin-bottom: 15px; padding: 0px; text-align: center; vertical-align: baseline;">
<a href="http://johnnyspacecommander.com/" style="background-color: transparent; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; border: 0px; color: #d8471d; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;"><img alt="Image" class=" wp-image aligncenter" height="1521" src="http://comicsastonish.files.wordpress.com/2012/06/kirby-puberty.jpg?w=1014&h=1521" style="background-color: #e2dbd1; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; border: 1px solid rgb(209, 191, 166); clear: both; display: block; height: auto; margin: 8px auto; max-width: 100%; padding: 3px; vertical-align: baseline;" width="1014" /></a></div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; line-height: 18px; margin-bottom: 15px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
It is deliriously silly and I’d buy a full length book of it in a second. Each back-up is different in each issue, but they’re all quite good. They’re great little escapes into other genres and have attitudes and lives all their own.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; line-height: 18px; margin-bottom: 15px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
The art in the books is crisp, simple and often times convincingly kinetic; Parnell manages some subtle and hilarious facial expressions – you can learn a lot about the characters just by looking at them. There is a wealth of style and personality given to these seemingly utilitarian images; they’re also usually quite intrinsically funny.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; line-height: 18px; margin-bottom: 15px; padding: 0px; text-align: center; vertical-align: baseline;">
<a href="http://johnnyspacecommander.com/" style="background-color: transparent; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; border: 0px; color: #d8471d; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;"><img alt="Image" class=" wp-image aligncenter" height="1040" src="http://comicsastonish.files.wordpress.com/2012/06/2-lunar-legion-of-yesterday_page6_image1.jpg?w=1014&h=1040" style="background-color: #e2dbd1; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; border: 1px solid rgb(209, 191, 166); clear: both; display: block; height: auto; margin: 8px auto; max-width: 100%; padding: 3px; vertical-align: baseline;" width="1014" /></a></div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; line-height: 18px; margin-bottom: 15px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
The backgrounds are actually hand-painted watercolors so they possess a textural, tactile quality that makes them engaging even though they’re basically one or two tone backdrops. They emphasize the skewed characters, helping them stand out and pop off the page in all their cartoony over-acting. I find it to be a very compelling look and I wish more people used hand-painted backgrounds.</div>

Here we are, more art for an advertisment that will appear in other IndyPlanet books. I decided to do this one based on a beloved classic, "Planet of the Apes". Yes, that is Dick dressed as Nova. My favorite part however, is that Johnny still has his mask and scarf on with the loincloth.</div>

BUY THIS BOOK!!! IT'S GREAT!!! EVERYONE SHOULD KNOW THAT! JEEZ!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
That's what I want to say.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
But the reality is that it is a slow process to actually sell a book. And I hate it.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
At <b>IndyPlanet, </b>we have an ad swap program to advertise our books. I had so much fun doing it that I made three in one day. I'll share them all with you here, along with the original art. I may turn them into posters soon, we'll see.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Until then;</div>

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left; text-indent: 0.5in;">Ten hours before having sex with the “Black Russian” (See the preceding chapter for details.), Lance Mannon walked into the Washington headquarters of S.H.E.L.L. Of course, on the outside it looked nothing like the headquarters of the world’s most secret spy agency. Which of course is a good thing, seeing as how they were really secret and wanted to keep it that way. <o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left; text-indent: 0.5in;">Mannon opened the door to the Chairman’s office. His secretary, Karen Bedwell, looked up and smiled at him. “You’re late; he’s waiting for you inside.” She pushed a button and the light above the big door behind her changed from red to green with a buzz. Lance gave her a wink and moved toward the door. Miss Bedwell watched him walk by, never noticing the wink. This was the problem with a man who wears an eye patch, was it a wink? Or was it a blink? Who the hell could tell?<o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left; text-indent: 0.5in;">On the other side of the door, the Chairman sat behind a large wooden desk; he wore an all white suit and his bald head reflected the desk lamp. He appeared not to notice Lance Mannon, his best agent enter the room. Lance waited for him to look up. The Chairman closed the folder he was looking at and slid it across the desk toward Lance. “Ben Turnankoff.”<o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left; text-indent: 0.5in;">“Pardon me sir?”<o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left; text-indent: 0.5in;">“Dr. Benjamin Turnankoff, scientist.”<o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left; text-indent: 0.5in;">Mannon opened the folder and looked at the picture clipped to the top page. It was a man in his mid fifties with a gray mustache and glasses. He appeared to be playing beer pong with several young coeds at a “Girls Gone Wild” shoot.<o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left; text-indent: 0.5in;">The Chairman continued, “He was working for a European company called Walmex. Apparently he has gone missing, along with the only samples of “White Heart”, a virus that he had engineered.” He slid another file across the gigantic desk. “Everyone is looking for him and, more importantly, the “White Heart” virus. Your job is to find out what happened to Turnankoff and the virus. Did someone take him? Is he trying to sell it? We need to know.” He pointed at the second file. “Every agency in the world is going after this one. CIA, MI-6, U.N.C.L.E., IMF, T.H.R.U.S.H., IBS, ED, VH, JFK, LBJ and anyone else using a random string of letters in their name. Walmex did quite a bit of business with the Russians, so your best lead may be your toughest competition. Have you ever met the Black Russian?”<o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left; text-indent: 0.5in;">Lance had heard of the Russians top agent, but had never seen a picture of her. Inside the folder, he did see a picture of her. The Black Russian was just that, a black Russian. Mannon’s eye scanned the dossier. It contained the usual information, military experience, martial arts training, small arms expertise, spoke six languages and had two semesters of accounting classes under her belt from St. Petersburg community College. “Do you really think she knows where Turnankoff is sir?” <o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left; text-indent: 0.5in;">“Before he went missing, the Russians had him under surveillance. So I would say they have a better idea where he might be than anyone else at this point.” The Chairman removed a cigar from the box on his desk.<o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left; text-indent: 0.5in;">“How do you want me to handle this sir?”<o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left; text-indent: 0.5in;">“I want you to pump her for information of course.” He leaned back in his chair as he clipped the end of the cigar and put it in his mouth.<o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left; text-indent: 0.5in;">“You mean pump her full of drugs to interrogate her? Or find out what she knows and pump her full of lead? Or do you want me to pump her, like, you know, really pump her?” <o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left; text-indent: 0.5in;">“Whatever gets the job done Mannon.”<o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left; text-indent: 0.5in;">“Well sir… It’s just that I have never… gone… you know… “<o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left; text-indent: 0.5in;">“Afraid you won’t come back? Don’t worry son, if you find the grass to be that much sweeter on the other side, then you’ll have found that sweet, sweet grass in the service of your country!”<o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left; text-indent: 0.5in;">Lance left it at that. Something about the exchange between the two men had made him feel guilty and mildly racist.<o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left; text-indent: 0.5in;">“Your plane leaves in an hour.” He lit the cigar and took a puff. “Miss Bedwell has all of your paperwork” Lance rose from the chair he had gotten so many mission briefings in. He had quite an ass groove going in that chair. As he turned away from his boss he heard him say, “Good hunting Mannon.” Lance returned his gaze to the desk to see the Chairman giving him the thumbs up, with both hands no less. Mannon returned the gesture, and walked out of the office. He had a plane to catch. <o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left; text-indent: 0.5in;">And a black Russian to pump.<o:p></o:p></div>Doc Zolahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00819523417999107174noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-620229202220776582.post-14095665289455500412011-11-27T12:52:00.001-05:002011-11-27T12:55:43.307-05:00LANCE MANNON: PART 2 - SEX WITH THE BLACK RUSSIAN!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSchQrfk3Ge1Ma7RqJpzrH9aRXUIu5dPmT1uQC3vgqNG3NOAXaAjR-M5CBhlg4EefJk4MHUg2Ifl9wwGEsiZiyMInF0m4p-JZUMOPqk9W6qDcpIqfMUhc2geQBX_tJjll0IP_xgtwry-Pd/s1600/LANCE+PAGE+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSchQrfk3Ge1Ma7RqJpzrH9aRXUIu5dPmT1uQC3vgqNG3NOAXaAjR-M5CBhlg4EefJk4MHUg2Ifl9wwGEsiZiyMInF0m4p-JZUMOPqk9W6qDcpIqfMUhc2geQBX_tJjll0IP_xgtwry-Pd/s200/LANCE+PAGE+1.jpg" width="126" /></a></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />

The gun in its holster caressed his underarm like a well worn stick of deodorant. The feeling was a comforting one to Lance Mannon. No one else of course could see the weapon he wore under his tuxedo as he entered the casino. It was his little secret. He was a secretive man. A quality that was of course helpful, being that Lance Mannon was the worlds greatest gentleman secret agent. "Secret" being the key word of that whole thing. Lance Mannon was six foot two with brown hair that fell down over his left eyebrow. He had rugged good looks, made even more rugged by the eyepatch he wore over his right eye. The story of theat patch was one that Lance did not often tell, and is better left for another time.<br />
His eye scanned the casino floor from the top of the stairs. His gaze came to rest on the roulette table near the large windows on the right side of the room and a statuesque woman in a low cut white dress that was open down the left side. Her ebony skin glistened in stark contrast to the light colored material of the dress. Mannon recognised her from the photo in the dossier he had reciever earlier that day. Being that she was the only black person in the casino had made identifying her that much easier too. Lance had been sent here to intercept this beautiful woman. He loved these assignments, a whole lot of the spy game took place in casinos, dealt with exotic beautiful women, and all the free sex, more often than not from the aforementioned exotic women, was a big plus too.<br />
He moved down the stairs and across the casino floor. Lance Mannon glided down the steps like a Slinky, a real metal Slinky, not one of those plastic piece of crap ones that always gets tangled and broken. Mannon moved like a cat, fluid and sure. As he hit the casino floor, his eye swept the room. Looking for anything out of place. When he reached the roulette table he pulled out a cigarette and lit it. As he did he soaked in the black woman across from him. She had the most beautiful face he had ever seen that night. He also realized with a start that what he had mistaken from across the room as the topiary behind her was in fact, one of the largest afro's he had ever seen, making her a good six inches taller than she really was. Her bare arms showed off the muscle tone of a woman who was active, not in that freakish woman body builder way like a female Herman Munster, but feminine and attractive.<br />
Lance Mannon leaned forward and placed a stack of chips on black. "I'm betting my balls fall on black tonight." he said loudly. Several heads at the table turned to look at him. The woman to his left took two steps away. <br />
The black woman across the table spoke, "Where your balls land tonight, depends on how long your luck can last." The reply came with a thick Russian accent. This confirmed what Lance Mannon already knew, that this indeed was the infamous "Black Russian". Everyone's heads turned to the woman across the table from Lance. <br />
"With me," Lance said, "luck can last all night long." Like a tennis match, heads returned their gaze to Lance. One couple left the table.<br />
"With luck that long, a man should bet on black and let it ride." She arched her eyebrow as she looked him up and down, then continued, "Let it ride, all night. Mister...?"<br />
"The name is Mannon... Lance Mannon. Miss...?"<br />
"Titoff... Yanka Titoff."<br />
At this point, all activity at the table had stopped and everyone, including the dealer, was watching intently the scene playing out in front of them. Most faces were a combination of bewilderment and mild disgust. Three more people backed away from the table and nonchalantly moved to other areas of the casino, so as not to feel like the voyeurs they had inadvertently become. Only the swarthy little bald man at the far end of the table seemed to be enjoying himself. He had a toothy grin from ear to ear as his eyes darted between the two hormonally charged gamblers.<br />
"Well Miss Titoff, this evening I bet my balls on black. Dealer?" Lance turned to the dealer, who was staring at him slack jawed. "The wheel please." <br />
"The.. what? Oh.. yes sir the wheel." The dealer shook himself back to reality, then spun the wheel. The silver ball raced around the edge. After a moment the wheel began to slow and the ball rattled it's way through the numbers jumping from one to another. The tiny ball came to rest on black 13. The swarthy man at the end of the table clapped delightedly.<br />
"It seems your shiny ball has indeed fallen into a black hole this night Mr. Mannon." <br />
There was an audible "eww." from someone in the crowd.<br />
"As I am sure many balls do in your company Miss Titoff." Lance knew this really didn't make much sense, but at this point he was pretty sure they were talking about sex and thought it sounded provocative. "If you will please forgive me I have to be going. I have some business to attend to this evening." This was in fact the only business Lance Mannon had planned for the evening, but he wanted to play hard to get. He gathered his winnings and turned towards the door. Mannon was playing a dangerous game here, what if she didn't follow? The whole mission would be blown if she didn't. He was also a bit apprehensive about what might happen later in the hotel room if she did follow. Even with the amount of women Lance had been with, he had never "gone black" so to speak. His job often required sex with women, good guys and bad. How would his future job performance be affected if he did "go black" and then in fact could not "go back" as they say?<br />
"You move like big pussy."<br />
The words were said with a thick Russian accent. Mannon turned and faced Yanka Titoff. "Come again?"<br />
"If I am lucky, yes." She smiled. "I said you move like pussy cat. Move like big cat! RRoww! RRoww!" Her hands clawed the air. "You move like man who can take care of self and others. You know, move like tiger!" She leaned in close, her afro brushing against his temple, even though she was still four inches away. "Does big pussy cat man really have to go so soon? Just as things were getting interesting."<br />
Yes they were, Lance thought.<br />
Yes they were.Doc Zolahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00819523417999107174noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-620229202220776582.post-25538559715343730582011-11-15T16:53:00.000-05:002011-11-15T16:53:24.241-05:00LANCE MANNON: AGENT OF S.H.E.L.L.<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

Below is page one of issue 4, I haven't decided on a title yet.<br />
The first image is just an inked page. Simple enough. I draw with pencil then ink with Sharpie marker. The image is then scanned and cleaned up, extended lines get erased, stuff like that.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8eLObYy4fP_Ar-0v_zIN2IOJ-1fqEyjeJDzhOSvHjFX_MuOiUzXKsuR_TWzYwbdX-zlz9QaIz_kdxg8xCD2nM_pl7vHC-lXb1GKHD_i-TM7ZsGpqygrcRUF5jdSTFnwAOq2PdZt2k1CBk/s1600/page+1bwweb.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8eLObYy4fP_Ar-0v_zIN2IOJ-1fqEyjeJDzhOSvHjFX_MuOiUzXKsuR_TWzYwbdX-zlz9QaIz_kdxg8xCD2nM_pl7vHC-lXb1GKHD_i-TM7ZsGpqygrcRUF5jdSTFnwAOq2PdZt2k1CBk/s640/page+1bwweb.jpg" width="422" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">After scanning, (I have to stitch the two or three pieces together) I create 3 layers to work with. To do that I have to get rid of the solid white areas, that can a real pain, so I can add color behind the inks. Sometimes I'll forget a mouth or an eye and have to go back to paste it on top. After that is done I can start laying in the backgrounds. I have a folder full of watercolor backgrounds that I have painted and scanned. The page now looks like I have done some kind of wash over the whole thing.</div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUWMtmTvGUWSY1ZfWLeeNgD5lm7fYUgNfJkWybyZV4sfb6MznF0txPbouU-1wcq9hAnwfglL4GDaLPu4g6eI2tik6wUuIt9LRmCnGnN0RbJCk8MD5jPJXWJiMZ0R3FFc0G7kySlwIlsCaN/s1600/page+1color1web.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUWMtmTvGUWSY1ZfWLeeNgD5lm7fYUgNfJkWybyZV4sfb6MznF0txPbouU-1wcq9hAnwfglL4GDaLPu4g6eI2tik6wUuIt9LRmCnGnN0RbJCk8MD5jPJXWJiMZ0R3FFc0G7kySlwIlsCaN/s640/page+1color1web.jpg" width="422" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Now I can start to use the paint bucket to lay in big solid areas, shirts, pants, skin color, things like that. Finally I use my stylus to add some simple shadows and darken in areas to give the characters some form. I'm not painting the Mona Lisa here, so I really keep it simple. The KISS method (Keep It Simple Stupid!) works just as well here as it does in the other parts of my life.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1fkoZfxuu2MochEu9Rq8E9msHzDGZj9M4D_hqQRWQSZxFjfB3ZkI3draiElVkqknJ40HWz1UWK04hD637RDWL1cymOB6tNAo2YqK84JgdnFPgpdCtYIUF5e3h-rN9v_NbbIop6toIjbu5/s1600/page+1color2web.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1fkoZfxuu2MochEu9Rq8E9msHzDGZj9M4D_hqQRWQSZxFjfB3ZkI3draiElVkqknJ40HWz1UWK04hD637RDWL1cymOB6tNAo2YqK84JgdnFPgpdCtYIUF5e3h-rN9v_NbbIop6toIjbu5/s640/page+1color2web.jpg" width="422" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The last part is lettering. That means that I actually have to write the script now I suppose. Up until now I've been drawing from a basic page by page outline. Totally the MARVEL method, as performed by a normal guy like me on the weekends and after work, in between kids, taking the dogs out, running errands and basically living my life. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
